Labuan Bajo – Rinca – Komodo – Riung Sailing Cruises 05 Days 04 Nights

Komodo Island
Komodo is one of the 17,508 islands that make up the Republic of Indonesia. The island is particularly notable as the natural habitat of the Komodo Dragon, the largest lizard on earth and consequently named after the island. Komodo Island has a surface area of 390 km² and a permanent population of over 2,000. The inhabitants of the island are descendants of former convicts who were exiled to the island and who have mixed with Bugis from Sulawesi. The population are primarily adherents of Islam but there are also Christian and Hindu congregations.

Komodo is part of the Lesser Sunda chain of islands and forms part of the Komodo National Park. In addition, the island is a popular destination for diving. Administratively, it is part of the East Nusa Tenggara province.

Rinca Island
Rinca, also known as Rincah and Rindja, is a small island near Komodo island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia within the West Manggarai Regency. The island is famous for komodo dragons, giant lizards that can measure up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) long. Rinca is also populated with many other species such as wild pigs, buffalos and many birds.

Being less known and less visited than Komodo it is an excellent place to see the komodo dragon in its natural environment with fewer people to disturb them. Day trips can be arranged from Labuan Bajo on Flores by small boat at the park headquarters.

The island’s area is 198 square kilometres (76 sq mi).

Living conditions for local people on the island are often difficult. Education facilities, for example, are quite limited for children. Some non-government organisations help with the provision of books for children on Rinca. Local people must also take some care to avoid komodo dragons because komodos in the area occasionally attack and kill humans.

Riung 17 Islands Marine Park
Riung, a small fishing village on the north coast of the Ngada district, is the starting point for trips to the Seventeen Islands Marine Park Riung 17 islands, famed for its fantastic coral gardens. Many of the islands have beautiful white, sandy beaches and vivid reefs with an interesting underwater world that can be discovered with a snorkel and goggles.

However, it is not only the marine park that contributes to the area’s special atmosphere. The charming village of Riung is rich in cultural heritage and thus makes a perfect place to encounter the Riung’s exciting ceremonies around the traditional hunting and boxing activities of its people.

The local people show a quite heterogenous ethnic profile. Most of them are Bimanese and Buginese Muslims, Manggaraians, or people from Bajawa. This creates a unique and dynamic community with a diversified cultural output.
